These images, like most photographs, are examples of the ongoing relationship between light and dark, and of the shadows that exist between the two. If you think about it, much of life is like that, between two extremes, and the majority of our time transpires in that shadowland.

In “Balance,” a lone bird appears as a sentry in that hazy time between day and night. Fog plays a part, of course. While maintaining this steadfast vigil, the bird keeps equilibrium in check and projects a feeling of tranquility.

“The Burning,” to me, is about the life force in each of us. Yes, it is also about passion, and perhaps even destruction. It is open to the viewers’ interpretation, but the fact remains that it evokes a sense of urgency, for better or worse.

“Blue Window” makes me think about the complicated nature of life, and how we are so involved in one thing or another in our day-to-day existence that we overlook the true purpose of it all. The blue window, seemingly small against the backdrop of complications, persists to show the way for escape, for a better way to exist.

“Stone and Sky” is a communion of earth and sky. Soon after taking this photograph, I realized that there is something of a transcendental quality about it. The play between light and shadow and color has an ethereal quality that surprised me. I feel drawn to it for the feeling it evokes.

“A Seat Near the Light” has much the same feeling, at least for me, as the “Stone and Sky” image. The abstract seat beckons to us as a place to rest, and to bask in the light from an unknown source. In this way it evokes a sense of tranquility, and perhaps spirituality, however one defines it.

But these are but my personal perceptions and reflections. As I said before, the viewer will see what he or she sees. Whatever that is, I hope it is a worthwhile experience.
